The ORE DiaPFC monitoring unit

In situ monitoring of diadromous fish in coastal rivers (ORE DiaPFC)

The ORE DiaPFC unit studies highly migratory amphihaline species such as salmon, trout, eel, shad and lamprey. These species are an emblematic component of the biodiversity of our coastal rivers, but have become vulnerable as a result of human activity. The research is designed to understand and forecast the evolution of these populations as changes in the climate and in agricultural practices impact on their environment, from immediate habitat to river catchment.

ORE DiaPFC combines provisions for long-term in situ monitoring of diadromous fish populations and their environments with experimental facilities and in silico simulation tools working with virtual populations.

The unit uses data from four stream networks, using experimentation facilities in Rennes and Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle. The rivers are:

  • the Oir in Normandy (Manche département)
  • the Bresle in Normandy (Seine-Maritime département)
  • the Scorff in Brittany (Morbihan département)
  • the Nivelle in the French Basque Country (Pyrénées-Atlantiques département).

INRA selected the Oir, Scorff and Nivelle as river monitoring sites for ORE DiaPFC in 2003. The Bresle has been included since 2013.

U3E is tasked with the financial and operational management of ORE DiaPFC, with the centralisation and management of the data series and collections gathered at the four sites, and with making these data and collections available to the scientific communities concerned.
